Discover Maxine's Cafe

Walking into Maxine's Cafe for the first time feels like stepping into a neighborhood memory that never faded. Tucked along 13329 Washington Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90066, United States, this diner-style spot has the kind of warmth that doesn’t need explaining. I first stopped by on a quiet weekday morning after a recommendation from a longtime Mar Vista local, and within minutes it was clear why people keep coming back. The hum of conversation, the familiar clink of plates, and the smell of fresh coffee set the tone before the menu even hits the table.

The menu leans classic in the best way. Think hearty breakfasts, generous portions, and comfort food done with care. I ordered what the server casually called the usual, a plate of eggs, crispy hash browns, and thick-cut toast, and it arrived exactly how a diner breakfast should. No unnecessary flair, just solid execution. According to the National Restaurant Association, nearly 70 percent of diners value consistency over trend-driven dishes, and Maxine’s clearly understands that balance. You’re not here for experiments; you’re here because you want something reliable that tastes right every time.

On another visit, I watched a short-order cook manage a packed weekend rush with impressive efficiency. Orders were called out, plates moved fast, and nothing felt chaotic. That kind of workflow doesn’t happen by accident. It’s the result of years of repetition and a kitchen that knows its rhythm. Culinary schools often teach streamlined station management as a core principle, and seeing it applied so smoothly in a real diner setting is a reminder that expertise isn’t always flashy, it’s practical.

Reviews from regulars often mention the pancakes, and after trying them, I get it. They’re fluffy without being heavy, with a slightly crisp edge that suggests a well-seasoned griddle. Food scientists from organizations like the American Culinary Federation often point out that texture contrast plays a huge role in perceived flavor, and these pancakes are a textbook example. They don’t need toppings to shine, though plenty are available if you’re in the mood.

Beyond breakfast, the lunch options keep the same straightforward approach. Burgers, sandwiches, and daily specials rotate just enough to keep things interesting without losing the diner identity. I once chatted with a nearby office worker who said he eats here twice a week because he knows exactly what he’s getting and how long it’ll take. In a city like Los Angeles, where time is often as valuable as taste, that predictability matters.

The location also plays a role in its appeal. Sitting along Washington Boulevard, it’s easy to reach whether you’re local or just passing through the Westside. Parking can be limited during peak hours, which is worth noting, but most regulars seem to plan around it. That small inconvenience hasn’t slowed the steady stream of customers, which says a lot about trust built over time.

What stands out most is how personal the experience feels. Staff members remember faces, sometimes even orders, and that kind of connection builds credibility no review score alone can capture. While online reviews provide helpful snapshots, they can’t fully convey the comfort of being greeted like a neighbor. The only limitation worth mentioning is that the space can feel cozy during busy hours, so larger groups might have a short wait.

In an era where many restaurants chase trends, Maxine’s Cafe stays grounded. It relies on experience, proven methods, and a clear understanding of what diners actually want. That confidence shows in every plate served and every cup of coffee refilled without being asked.

  • What a peculiar, heartwarming story this place has! With such love they put into the cafe is how much love and pride they have put in their food and service. I was nicely surprised. Ordered a croissant sandwich, make your own omelette, cappuccino and fresh squeezed orange juice. Out of all, I’d say coffee was the only weaker side. But still, wouldn’t definitely be back if I’m in the area again. Also, their salsa is superb to my taste.

  • This is a very quaint and unique spot for breakfast or lunch. You can tell it’s been around for a while—in the best way possible. From the worn-in floors to the eclectic decor and vintage tables, everything has a warm, one-of-a-kind feel that gives the place real character. Seating options are varied: you can sit indoors at tables, at the bar on high stools, or outside on the small back patio or at a sidewalk table out front. It’s cozy without feeling cramped. The service is thoughtful and friendly, adding to the welcoming vibe. Definitely don’t miss the freshly made blueberry muffins—they’re a standout and worth the visit on their own. Outside dogs are allowed. Also, this place used to be called "Maxwell's" but it changed to Maxine's a little while back.

  • We looked up places to eat for breakfast while we were staying in the area and Maxine’s had good reviews so we checked it out. We ended up going three days in row for our breakfast because it was so good!! The food was incredible. The atmosphere is great- so cool and individual, playing awesome classic rock. The staff were also really welcoming and friendly. Would highly recommend you go here if you’re in the Venice / Marina area

  • Formally known as Maxwell‘s up until 2020 this location has been a popular breakfast spot for many decades. It can get quite busy during certain rushes, but we stopped in early this morning and did not have to wait at all to be seated. It’s quite small on the inside, but they have table, counter, and outdoor seating options. Our waitress was really friendly and everything that we ordered came out very quickly. It is a bit expensive compared to some other breakfast options, but that is most likely due to its location. Parking is also pretty easy, your best options will be in the neighborhood behind the restaurant or on Washington. They have a lot of great options on the menu, but I went with my favorite breakfast dish, which is the Eggs Benedict. I chose the Bomb Benedict because you choose your own protein and I went with the Louisiana Hot Sausage and really enjoyed it. It was pretty spicy with strong flavors and the eggs were cooked perfectly. I just loved the combo overall. I also ordered a Biscuit on the side and thought it was one of the best Biscuits that I’ve had in a very long time. It was giant, fluffy, and everything that I hope for when ordering a Biscuit. I would stop here again just for the Biscuit, even though I’ve already dined in at this place many times over the years. I would recommend and will be back again many times in the future.

  • Maxine’s Cafe has a retro vibe compared to your typical branch diner. The owner of the restaurant is friendly and welcoming, which would often give a good first impression, and thankfully, the food did follow suit. The variation on the menu was also plentiful to choose from. The food: - Classic Breakfast w/ Waffles (10/10): The texture of the waffles was satisfying, although I do think a melted butter would have been better to go along with it, but then again, it’s all about personal preference. The eggs were cooked to perfection and I liked how they were not soaked in oil. The potatoes were fresh and seasoned to perfection. Also, the sausages were juicy and not too salty. With that said, the portion given was definitely acceptable. - Classic Breakfast w/ Pancakes (8/10): This version is basically the same as 2x2x2 but with no fruits and instead of waffles, i got the pancakes. I thought their pancakes were too soft for my liking, but then again, everyone’s tastes are different. With all that in mind, the only downsides that I have to say about this place is the space in this restaurant is kind of small for my liking and parking spaces are kind of limited. Nevertheless, if you happen to be in the area, this brunch restaurant is worth a try.

  • Breakfast that can't get any better! We got the bomb Benedict that are literally the bomb!! The omelette was layered and loaded and we had some well brewed coffee and orange juice to wash it all down. The ambience is super cosy and the decor is quirky being themed with rather cool wall mounted party skateboards. Definitely a gem.
